History at Tobervilla

The origins of our property

Not much is known about the origins of Tobervilla House as it predates any formal history of the area.  It is known to have been built sometime in the 18th century based on the business of the local harbour Westcove.

It was originally known as Westcove Hotel, and housed guests mostly accessing the area initially through the harbour. Westcove harbour and many small harbours were known for transport of contraband (typically French brandy and wool) to avoid extortionate English taxes. Tobervilla was a place of commerce and the lounge was originally a small shop and bar counter that sold provisions by weight. It is evident from the architecture that it was built in three stages; first the main front of the building; then there was an extension towards the countryside; followed by a rear extension at a much later date.

By residents who are now in their 80s we were fortunate to gain some history of the previous hotel. It was owned by the Flaherty Sisters, and half a century ago they owned and ran all the premier business establishments in the area; being the Black Shop Castlecove, the Blind Piper in Caherdaniel and Tobervilla (formally Westcove Hotel).

All of the women were known for their business acumen and their fabulous wardrobes, on show weekly at mass. None of the sisters married and so the house was left to the long-term butler whom did not operate the house as a hotel.

The house fell into disrepair for about 40 years, however in 2022 its current owners, Melissa and Michael McAllen, restored the guest house so future guests can experience the grandeur of a historic Georgian Irish Home.

As the house at the harbour was still called Westcove House, and wanting to avoid any confusion, especially with modern day online bookings; we renamed the house to reflect our near-by point of interest St Crohan’s Well. This well is also known as Well of the Blessed Tree, or Tobar na Bhilé (phonetically Tobervilla).
